Over there by the road, do you see ...

I see the woman [over there], I see [her], I see, but [only] dimly.

... the one who is spinning over there with distaff and spindle?

         Ah, spinning with a distaff.

Did you spin when you were young?

         Who, me?

         Yes.

I used to spin, and weave,

         Ah! I dropped my distaff!

I’d spin, and [work] on the loom thus.

We used to card and spin. Ah, how we used to work! How could I not spin?

I have a distaff; I used to spin, and I spin and weave [now too].

and I used to reap – like this – and she used to reap, and everything.

         Hello.

         Hello.

         What are you [all] doing?

         Well, we're spinning.

         What do you call this?

         [A] distaff.

         [And] this?

         The wool on the distaff.

[OK, that's the] wool on the distaff, and this?

         [A] spindle.

Don't you sometimes put some sort of thing underneath to weigh it down?

Some people do, but I don't put [anything there].

What do you call that thing you put underneath to weigh it down?

Well, some [add] a small bolt [to make it] heavier ...

         Uh huh

... some put [in] a tiny bolt.

         They put a small bolt?

These people seem to have fallen out of the sky!

They don’t know about threshing, nor about reaping, nor about distaffs.

         They know, they know.

Look at this guy, asking [all] these [questions]!

They know, they know. They know everything.

         [laughter]

So why do they ask [then]?

Well, so as to know more.

         They don’t know ...

         [laughter]

They know all sorts [of stuff that] we don’t know.

... where the threshing fields are, they didn’t [seem to] know where we did the reaping,

where we did the threshing. Nothing! [They came] from the sky.

         They’re not from the sky

Tell them to make it start raining!

They’re not from the sky, these [people].

         To make it start raining?

         Hm.

You [should] make it start raining.

         Uh huh [laughter]

In the old days we used to do special prayers, people cross themselves …

         Ah ha.

... [and say] “Dear God, make it rain; dear God, make it rain.”

But now it won’t be that way. They’ll go –

Where are the others of your group?

         We’re all here

Well, the other day there was another… there were some others.

Yes, but now we’ve come [with] another [group].

         Ah, others.

We came by foot today from Kozìčino.

         Ahhh.

         Now –

         Mhm.

now we have to “pray” at the [local village] municipal hall.

Ah. [laughter] Before the municipal hall …

At the municipal hall, in the place where they have scribes.

         Heh.

They do the ceremony when someone marries,

This – what she’s saying now, is it getting recorded?

they do marriages, they do christenings,

         [Ah] yes, it’s recording.

         they – when you die

         [laughter]

they do the funeral. There’s no priest.

[So] you say that [people] also go to [it] to pray, right?

It’s to it (the municipal hall) – them – to them that they have to pray

to make the rain start to fall so it will moisten the earth.

In the old days when there was no rain, what did you do

         to make it rain?

When the rain starts to fall?

No, when there wasn’t any rain and when, when they want it to rain.

Well, it used to rain all the time, but now it doesn’t. Another time when …

You say “it used to rain”?! I can remember when it didn’t rain. When that year –

I know I went with my mother to Studeni Kladenec

to do the wash there. Nowhere to do the washing!

Sand up to your head! We [had to] escape from the heat –

Well, there is rain sometimes …

The oxen going with the carts, the carts carrying sheaves through the fields,

         came upon so much dust.

         … but –

         Uh huh.

so much heat [that] they couldn’t go on.

         But listen here –

         There wasn’t any water …

         Fine, but –

         .. that year.

… it would have rained back when –

I remember one, almost – also that year.

         This year [it’s] the same.

         But [back] then –

It’ll [all] be dust here in the collective farm.

… when the corn di –

         [laughter]

Listen, Mariona, about the corn: If it’s grown,

then it will have rained. But when we took in the harvest it hadn’t rained.

[Yes,] the harvest was like that.

So then, it had to have rained already for [things] to have grown –

for what had been sowed to have grown.

[unintelligible] [it should] have rained but it’s not raining.

         But this year, this year?

[We have] to pray, we ought to have done the prayers.

         But [for] prayers,

         The [other] villages did [prayers].

there has to be a priest here, to recite [them], …

         Well, he is here, …

         … [for everyone] to pray.

… [but] who’s going to pay him?

But these [folk] here now don’t recognize the priest.

But that was then. It used to be free. But now you have to

pay the priest to come here..

         But …

         Without money, he won’t come.

… why? They have a priest. There’s a priest now. But they don’t want him.

They don’t want him? Listen, how [can it be that] they don’t want him?

There is a priest, you know, [and] the priest comes here.

But because you haven’t been going

         Well –

         to church –

         The priest comes, but –

I went [to church] this year. I went at Easter [time].

         I – prayers –

         I go here [unintelligible]

I know the prayers too! You maybe don’t know, [but] I know.

         I know them.

Of course I know! We’ve been going to prayers since I was very young …

         Is that so?

… and it started to rain even then,

         They go –

[people] were splashing in the water…

Ah, just see how you “know”!

         … in the whirlpools.

They used to go there and [make] sacrifices. The men do the slaughtering,...

         [Yes,] there were sacrifices.

… the women bake bread in the [outdoor] ovens, they go

and exchange [food], they prostrate themselves (= lie eyes down) and pray…

I remember it – [it was] when ...

… [and] the priest would recite [the prayers].

... I was quite young when I went there to pray.

         But now –

Do you think I am [still] small?

         I’m already ...

         So!

         ... sixty-eight or [sixty]-nine years old now

         You’ve remembered [it all].

         Umhm.

         [Indeed] I did remember.

What was it about that year when things went bad? Anyone who could,

[would sell] pigs [for] seven or eight thousand, for seven or eight hundred,

seven or eight hundred, or five hundred each – they’d sell [them] and buy grain.

Whoever can will [do it] – but [the one] who can’t …

Well, [the one] who can, [fine, but the one] who can’t – [that’s] the end.

… [the one] who can’t won’t [be able] to buy anything.

Well, they should make a sacrifice. I won’t go [though].

I – even if it doesn’t rain – I’m, well, I’m on the way already.

I’m already for the graveyard. But let’s [help make] it rain for you.

Let them make a sacrifice, and they’ll pray that it will start raining

and moisten the corn. [Otherwise] what’s [the point of] your having sown it?

Ah but look: we sowed it, and didn’t [get] a thing, not this year either.

Well, so what if you didn’t sow? Your sister, and your neighbor –

[they] sowed over there. And your garden will get some moisture, won’t it?

And I’d be content [if I got a little] here.

Well OK, fine, if it would rain. But it’s not raining, see?

Even here, a bit of moisture and I’d be content.

The fleas would start coming out, there’d get to be more [of them].

I haven’t anything sown here, but if it’d start to rain here I’d be content.

And if some – I keep on saying “God, God, please!
