[Were there water buffaloes?]
39 (a) ìməš'e səfs'èm màlku punəč'àlu ìməš'e biul'à mnògu
There were very few. In principle there were many water buffaloes,
40 (a) predì də sə ubrəzùvə t'èkezes'ètu dukətu bene č'àsni
Before the collective farm was formed, when we were private [landowners],
41 (a) biul'à ìməš'e kunè ìməš'e kràvi ìməš'e təkìvə
there were water buffaloes, horses, cows, there were these –
42 (a) tugàvə ìməš'e bìuli mnògu kràvi ìmaše
at that time there were many water buffaloes. There were cows –

the water buffaloes wanted [to find] a puddle. So we would go and get water

from the river with copper [cauldrons] so as to fill the puddle with water.
4 (b) i t'è̝ kətu dòjdət də l'è̝gnət biul'àtə sɨ̀čkit'e l'àgət
And when the water buffaloes come to lie down, they all lie down
5 (b) vəv g'òlət vàl'ət sə tərkàl'ət sə tàm
in the puddle – they roll and wallow around there.
6 (b) ìməhmə edìn bìvul vɨ̀nəgi nɨ beše stràh də ìdeme pri n'è̝gu
We used to have one water buffalo, and we were always afraid to go near it.
7 (b) budèš'e əmə təkà də budèš'e č'e jedɨ̀n də ìd'e
It used to butt, it used to butt so much that if one were to go [near]
8 (b) də gu č'èš'e pəg drùk də mu vərzè̝ rugi rugàtə
to groom it, another [had] to go tie its horn.

[Which animals did you raise?]

Two or three horses each; there’d be a female water buffalo, there’d be horses.
19 (c) ə ìməne si g'unl'učìi xòrə tə pə edni pəs'àə
And we’d have people as day-workers. Some pastured
20 (c) kràvite drùgi pəs'àə kònetu drùgi pəs'àə biul'àtə
cows, others pastured horses, and others pastured water buffaloes.

“unharness the water buffaloes and we’ll both go,” he said,
67 (b) də ukàl’əme bɨ̀ulete nə n’àkəde nə ednə lòkvə
“to let the water buffalo wallow in mud somewhere in some puddle,
68 (b) pə vulòvetȅ žə gi nəpoìm ili tɨ̀ žə gi zəkàrəš
and [then] water the oxen. Or [how about] you take [the oxen]
69 (b) də gi nəpuìš às kàe še unəkàl’am biul’àtə
to water them, and I,” he said, “will see the water buffalo to the mud.”
70 (b) i tɤ̀j ukàl’ɤni bɨ̀ulete kət vərɤ̀t àz kət da ti kaa
